Cyber Recycling and much more in Miami-Dade and Broward

My Friend Phillip Hatfield has just sent me this useful information about recycling books, computers and other goods we no longer use. And  I decided to share it  with you:

What to do as one summer day leads to another.

No scratch that, actually, I was looking for my crank radio and shakeable flashlight to be prepared for the arriving Hurricane and Tropical Storm season, which in turn was like looking for the proverbial “needle in a haystack.”  Geez, I never considered myself a pack-rat, but the collection of items that I have never used/worn was mindboggling.  So I decided to investigate ways to create more space for myself and thought you might be interested, some even include tax deductions.  I am always looking for alternatives, so if you know any feel free to send them back to me so we can share.

1. Passing on your PC/Printer/Cell Phone:  Since computers are filled with toxins, tossing them into the trash is illegal.  What you may not know is that a lot of e-recycling programs, especially free ones, hire firms that remove the functional parts and strip the scraps for metal, which-you guessed it-also releases toxic chemicals. For peace of mind, check the list of recyclers recommended by the Electronics TakeBack Coalition, a national alliance for responsible e-recycling. Even more convenient, Best Buy stores now accept most old laptops, monitors, and TVs. They may charge a $10 fee-but they’ll hand over a $10 gift card in exchange.  Also, check out BW recycling in Hallandale, FL and they wll take your old computer and cell phone off your hands, most without their nominal desposal fee.  Check out crserecycling and tbeir local drop-offs, where they will take Electronics to Household appliances

2. Carry your books to a Donation Center nearest you: Reselling old books can be tempting: try miami’s craigslist.com or backpage.com for that.   For those sitting on antique books or collector series;  A good starting point is the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America (ABAA). To obtain its free directory of 461 booksellers, call (212) 944-8291 or visit online at www.abaa.org.. But neither has much interest in the real dead weight-hardcovers and lowbrow bestsellers-and it’s hard to bring yourself to schlep 200 pounds of books to a donation drop-off, try http://www.cash4books.net for instance, they pay upto 15 percent of a title’s new retail price in cash and also pays for shipping.

3. Undo Your Fashion Don’t's and never should haves:   Ladies, still waiting for hoop skirts ,leg warmers and cone bras to come back into fashion, well don’t.  Also, consider donating clothes that you have not worn for the last two years.  They say you can’t change a man only improve his wardrobe, consider ditching his leisure suit and polyiester shirts to those in need.

Contacts:

Goodwill www.goodwill.org; You can drop off at center nearest you (behind Aventura Mall) or if the pick-up is large enought, they will pick-up

The Salvation Army http://satruck.org/donate-goods needs two weeks’ notice for such requests. In Miami-Dade, it’s at 305-573-4200; in Broward, 954-463-3725. Drivers are off on Sundays and Mondays

http://miamirescuemission.com will pick up but mens and womens clothes with no rips, tears or stains. Residents in Miami-Dade and Broward counties should call 800-817-HOPE (4673), toll-free.

4. Give Furniture the Heave-Ho: That broken dining room set, that ugly sofa and worn out matress, they just sit there, defying your every attempt to dislodge them. Spare your back and spoil your conscience by calling in some muscle from local charities http://miamirescuemission.com

also picks up but only if furniture is in ”good” condition — no rips, tears or stains. Residents in Miami-Dade and Broward counties should call 800-817-HOPE (4673), toll-free.

The Broward Partnership for the Homeless, http://www.bphi.org/, at 920 NW Seventh Ave., Fort Lauderdale, also accepts furniture; 954-832-7031.

Douglas Gardens Thrift Shop of the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged. Its stores are at 5713 NW 27th Ave., Miami, and 3194 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd., Hallandale Beach; 305-638-1900 or 800-876-4483. Both locations are open seven days a week.

Habitat for Humanity www.habitat.org has two ReStores in Miami-Dade: 3800 NW 22nd Ave., Miami, immediately south of State Road 112 (305-637-4913), and 19100 SW 106th Ave., Cutler Bay (305-259-2891). Both are open Tuesday through Saturday. Call 305-637-4913 to arrange a pickup. The Broward ReStore is at 513 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale (954-763-7771). It’s open Monday through Saturday. Be precise about your need for a pickup. 5. Swap Till You Drop: No, I am not talking about the swapshop in Ft Lauderdale.  However, clearing out your odds and ends is a great excuse to hop onto Freecycle, a chain of online forums that members use to give away items that might otherwise end up in a landfill. A recent scroll through the Miami site (run through Yahoo Groups) revealed everything from a sunbed to working stoplight. But beware: You may end up nabbing as much stuff as you shed. You may also consider selling them, at NO cost to the lister at craigslist, but beware of scammers offering cashiers checks worth more than you are asking for your item.
